The island of San Borondón is a popular legend of the Canary Islands (Spain) on an island that appears and disappears for several centuries. The origin was the legendary journey of San Brandán de Clonfert, one of the great Irish evangelizing monks of the sixth century(«San Borondón»). The island is known in Europe as "island of San Brandán" since its capture by medieval cartographers. In the Canary Islands the myth was adopted with enthusiasm, and even in the name, to the local idiosyncrasy. Due to its characteristics and strange behaviors, such as the appearance and disappearing behind a layer of fog or clouds. called "the Inaccessible", "the Non Trubada", "the Undercover", "the Lost", "the Enchanted" and some other name.

The Treaty of Alcáçovas, signed between Spain and Portugal in 1479 to territorially divide the Atlantic, still to be navigated, specifically San Borondón ("still to be won") belonged to the Canary Archipelago.1 The Bay of Samborombón (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) was named in such a way during the expedition of Magallanes in March 1520, in the belief that it had been formed by the detachment of the island of San Borondón from the American continent.
